The Social Media Professional Community

Please read/comment this article (talk) about how Social Media communities are chosen and what it means about us. I particularly like the concept that Social Media will not solve everything. I prefer to think that communities will do that.

We sometimes forget that the number of people with internet access and using social media websites are just a drop in the ocean compared to the number of people on this planet.

In time maybe we will all be connected, as long as we can find a low carbon way of doing it!

I like the summary Andrew. The only one I would want to talk about is Twitter. From all I have read it looks like Twitter is in the 25-45 range and not used by teens.

The thing I love about all these studies is they tend (sweeping judgement) to ignore the world of Online Games. I think most people find the game enjoyable but meeting up with friends and sharing an experience a much better one.

What do you think?

That's a very intense article, talking about social divides between Facebook and MySpace users. As one of the older guys, in teen parlance, my only reason for using MySpace is to share my hobby interests -- music. And for networking, well there's Facebook and LinkedIn. Wish they had mentioned LinkedIn because there's another social divide their that is important to be aware of --- the professional side of you versus the personable.

Warning: Take the following sweeping generalizations with a grain of salt, but there's is truth in them:

MySpace is for youngsters, music fans, PG-13 flirting, and self-expressive hobbyists
Facebook is for college kids (or aspiring) and a rapidly growing 'experimental' segment of professional adults; but unless you count a few entries made by the me-too types, Facebook as a mainstream social tool is still a myth
LinkedIn is for networking professionals, walking resumes, and job hunters and job seekers
Twitter is for mobile tweens, over-caffeinated young adults and the self-absorbed broadcasting professional
Blogging is for introspective literary types, hobbyists, and the self-expressive professionals who drank the 2.0 cool-aid and want to get ahead
