The Social Media Professional Community

I have just been watching an interview with Daniel Goleman as he discuses Social Intelligence.

You know, I thought That's us. We are all about Social Intelligence, after all the people in the social networks we foster have to have this to get on with one another. In fact we have a harder job, because we know that the written word is only about 7% of communication we loose 93% of all the message that is trying to be conveyed. This massive gap has to be made up so sometimes we add the emotion and feeling ourselves, and if you are like me we get it wrong every now and then.

We as professionals are not just about social intelligence we are about online social intelligence. So what can we learn from this. I think we first need to acknowledge that some people are more practised at online social intelligence that others and we should look to recruit these folks for our moderators or trusted mediators in our communities. They are likely to be able to spot issues before they arise and also if they do break out they are able to have a fair view of the situation and look to resolve it.

Well this is all fine and dandy for those who have this "online social intelligence" but what about us people who need to improve and get better at it. Well that is simple the just think about it. I believe that as long as you are aware of this subject you will start to see situations more clearly, and will start to spot how people are dealing with situations and then you will learn by doing.

I would love your feedback and stories.

For me, intelligence is a God-given blessing with the power to grow and expand by the application of wisdom, again God-given not MBA-driven. Our social experiences in the real world shape our real world social intelligence and I believe the same fundamental principle applies to the online sphere as well.

The online protocols that exist are not unlike the real world laws that govern human conduct. He/She who is cognisant of those "laws" and follow them passively as they evolve, will be able to survive in the online social universe, however, I believe that those who more than just survive, those who thrive, will be those who understand and apply the age old principle of focusing first and foremost on giving... on delivering great value in all of your social interactions, rather than interacting with a focused agenda of 'what can he/she do for me and my business, or me and my circumstance/need', as too many have long been "socialized" to conduct themselves socially.
