Hopefully with YouTube ditching 1 - 5 star rating we can all move to thumbs up and thumbs down.
This for most people will be no shock as most 1- 5 voting tends to end up around the 3 mark anyway.

Will you be changing your sites to use Thumbs up...
Please vot…

Google social search gives us another way to be social. It allows you to store, sites you are linked to and customise your search using your connections.
I just finished updating my Google Social page, I will see how many of my friends or connections do t…

Hi,
I just posted some more videos around to areas, online document collaboration and online email collaboration.
Google docs and Google wave. I only just realised that may have been very google focussed for this site, which is open to all.
I wanted to state that I think both of these tools have and will continue to change the way we work. I hope this is something that continues as we get more and more productions in our roles.
Has anyone used the Microsoft version of Google Docs? And is there…

Please read/comment this article (talk) about how Social Media communities are chosen and what it means about us. I particularly like the concept that Social Media will
not solve everything. I prefer to think that communities will do that.
We sometimes forget that the number of people with internet access and using social media websites are just a drop in the ocean compared to the number of people on this planet…

During a great discussion with a knowledgeable client on communities we discussed "Where should a community live?". This seemed like such a simple question when there was the "Social Media Land-grab" they live on our site. But now we have a handful of main community infrastructures. Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and MySpace (others in other languages) it is a little more in-depth.
It seems dated to expect your community to only talk in your environment, the community will talk where they want and…

I recently posted a comment on the Linked in group for this Community and was greeted with lots of HTML Markup in my comments.

Now, I have no control over this, in fact I did not even know Linkedin was making any changes, and yet every comment in the Discussion has this markup and…

Wow! What a great time to be in Social Media.
This week saw the launch of the two big players in the Social Media market going head to head. Facebook went first with
Facebook connect on the 4th of December followed quickly by Google with
Google Friend connect on the same day.
Everybody who signed up for google Friend Connect would have got an email like this:
"We appreciate your interest in G…

I am currently working to get a list of rules, guidelines to propose to the group that can be used a base for online communities. This has lead me to some great minds and interesting people. I will post it here when it is ready for your valued feedback.
In the meantime I saw this from Skype and thought it would be useful to discuss.

I think the fascinating thing about communities is
how they are formed. One of these elements that I seek to understand and would
love to discuss are the rules that exist at the beginning of a community, why these rules exist and how they evolve over time.
Here are some questions that vex me.
- Where do these rules come from?
- Do they evolve over time if so why?
- Do the rules reflex the rules of the physical location where the founders exist ie could you find the similar groups…

Well Yahoo's social network "Mash" has hit the dust. This is probably one of many, but with Yahoo's high profile they get noticed. It is a shame but I think it defines one of the big issues. Why do people want to network?
I loved the comment
underneath the story, that pretty much sums it up for me.
"social networking" paradigm has a fundamental problem, and that is that keeping in touch with other people shouldn't be an obj…

So what happens when you get the job of
building a community for an audience that is extremely passionate about a subject?
What do you do?
Lets face it, passionate is not a word you could use to describe all the offices or workplaces today. If you are lucky you will be surrounded by them, however this is not always the case.
Most of the work in a normal social network build is getting people inspired, proving to people that this is the place to collaborate to get things done. Aft…

I have just been watching an interview with
Daniel Goleman as he discuses
Social Intelligence.
You know, I thought
That's us. We are all about Social Intelligence, after all the people in the social networks we foster have to have this to get on with one another. In fact we have a harder job, because we know that the written word is only about 7% of communication
we loose 93% o…

So we have a great place where people can talk in Social Networks, but how do they actual learn?
This is a question that has vexed me for a long time. It seems that the act of learning is mis-understood. It seems that much of the world believe that just by giving a lecture or reading a book you can gain the learn stuff (or gain knowledge).
Well this is wrong.
I believe it is much more involved and simple than that.
I have ironically written a document that outlines my thinking as a share. This d…

Why we exist?
To forge the future of social networks from the perspective of people who manage, create, pay-for or run them.
Why create a group?
For a long time now I have wanted to discuss various ideas to ensure that communities get better and better. As a believer in making good use of time I hate to see the waste when people re-invent the wheel.
As all of us here are involved in professionally or about to create a social network it seems like a perfect opportunity to discuss a…
