I'd like to see a certification for Social Media Professional, something a marketing or training person could pin to their card that shows the world that This Person is a Very Important Person, and not just another goob with tons of keyboard time and no sunshine time.
To be a true "Professional", we'd need to establish a code of ethics, and some key knowledge areas which we continuously develop.
For the certification, that would need some basic Body of Knowledge, or Key Information Area, the words all mean about the same thing. The Body of Knowledge would have to be substantiated through lasting, recognized materials (usually books, arghgh). We'd set up some experience requirements (tenure type stuff, though not significant: Active Accounts on networks, X number of followers or Friends or whatever, that type stuff). And an Examination.
I agree, you could have a test to understand the basics of
Blogs, Twitter, Forums etc
Also a basic etiquette set of questions: you know how not to get into a flame war.
I note that number of followers is in there: What number would you pick? Is the number of followers important? Would this encourage people to buy followers to "game" the test?
Sounds like a social media business opportunity, why not give it a go and see if you can get some traction in companies wanting to weed out the cowboys.
